March 2017 Chartiable Organization of the Month: American Civil Liberties Union

In early March I announced a giving initiative that includes donating 5% of my total monthly sales (not just revenue - but the total amount sold!) going forward to charities and causes in line with my mission and beliefs as well as those of my customers.

Along with this announcement I put out a call for suggestions of charities and charitable organizations that have meaning and are doing good work and the American Civil Liberties Union was hands-down the most listed. I am personally part of this organization and firmly belief in all that they stand for so I was so happy to see that this resonated strongly with my tribe.

To be totally honest, I hadn't heard much about the ACLU until last fall during election season. If you're like me pre-Trump presidency and don't know much about what they do, the quick and dirty is that the ACLU works to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States and has been doing so for almost 100 years. In today's political climate I believe it's important to stand up for our rights and the rights of others and know that donating a portion of my sales for March is definitely going to a cause I'm willing to stand behind. They've already gone to bat to protect the rights of women, refugees, immigrants, the LGBTQ community, and more. Although I hope that in the near future they won't have to fight so hard for what seems to be common sense to many Americans, I have faith that they will continue to fight for all of us to protect our equal rights as human beings.
